Sony Patent Hints at Possible PlayStation 5 VR Headset
Written Wednesday, October 09, 2019 By Matt Lorrigan

A Sony patent filing that has recently been made public and unearthed by Dutch site Let’s Go Digital and reported by Eurogamer, appears to show off a brand new PlayStation VR headset.

The images included in the patent show a similar headset design to the current PSVR set-up including LEDs, with two additional cameras on the front and one on the back. A PlayStation Move-style controller is also included in the diagrams, with yet another camera included on the end.

The patent also makes reference to a transparent view, using the front facing cameras to see the real world in front of you through the headset. While this does sound like the concept for a slightly terrifying Black Mirror episode, this could be used for augmented reality applications or stereoscopic 3D.

In what could be the most radical change from the current PSVR unit, the patent mentions that the new set-up could be wireless, using Bluetooth instead to send data between the console and the headset.

A patent being filed doesn’t always lead to a product being released, but we could very well be seeing Sony continuing to support VR into the next generation with this new headset. With the recent confirmation of PlayStation 5 coming holiday 2020, the future looks exciting for PlayStation fans.

@1 just because you dont want it doesnt mean nobody wants it. If psvr sold enough that a 2.0 is i the works, good for them. I for one, am excited to see where virtual reality is going.

Quite possibly dreaming too big here but how cool would it be if it came packaged with the PS5 by default like the Kinect did with the Xbox One; I've always been tempted by the PSVR but have never quite been willing to take the plunge when it costs so much on top of the price of the console itself

@3 Price would probably put them off doing that. Also if this is an upgraded version, you'd hope they make is usable with PS4/PRO. Giving them a big market right out the door, those that want a PSVR with PS4 but held off might be tempted for a similarly priced upgrade that will carry over to PS5. If they sell a few million it's worth the time for them, I doubt it's pulling people away from the base console, which if shipping in 12 months has to be close to if not already finalised.

Just how the PS Vita was a companion to the PS4 when it first came out, the PS VR could be a companion to the PS5

If it's a solid upgrade from the current sony VR, then it would be the tipping point for me to get it (by that meaning my wife would give the OK because she would want to try it)
