There's no disputing the popularity of Fortnite: Battle Royale. In recent years, the free-to-play BR game has garnered a huge audience and accumulated a colossal amount of revenue for developer Epic Games. But this year has seen that revenue on the downturn, despite Fortnite still being the biggest battle royale title by some margin.

According to data analysis and research website Edison Trends, spending in Fortnite has dropped by 52% since Q2 2018, despite a meteoric rise of 110% on average per month between May 2017 and November 2018. A staggering 83% of purchases were for V-Bucks between 1st August 2018 and 31st July 2019, while bundles, packs and other transactions make up the rest of Fortnite's revenue.

Free-to-play battle royale competitor Apex Legends shares the majority of in-game spending with Fortnite, but its player base has proved to be more loyal, with 62% of Apex Legends players repeating in-game purchases each month - 96% on Apex Coins, 4% on Packs during the same August 2018 - July 2019 period - compared to 49% for Fortnite. PUBG, meanwhile, has seen sales dip by 2% since Q2 2018.

Good, hopefully it will stop all the publishers from tacking on Battle Royale modes into their games (looking at you Fallout 76).
